When Self-Love Becomes More Than a Survival Strategy
Self-love is often talked about as a luxury—a spa day or a quiet afternoon reading a good book in a hot bath. But when you live with chronic pain, anxiety, or the heavy weight of grief, self-love becomes something much more vital. It becomes a survival strategy. It becomes the foundation of your recovery.
The Turning Point: When Pain Becomes a Teacher
For many of us, pain feels like an enemy. It’s an intruder that steals our mobility, our sleep, and our joy. In my own journey, and through the years I’ve spent building Waterfall Yoga Therapy, I’ve learned that pain is actually a messenger. It’s the body’s way of screaming for a different kind of attention.
When we are in the throes of fear or grief, we often disconnect from our bodies to protect ourselves. We “check out.” But healing doesn’t happen in isolation from ourselves; it happens when we finally decide to check back in.
The RAIN Method: A Somatic Plan for Self-Check-ins
Through yoga therapy, I’ve found that the RAIN method is one of the most effective ways to check in with our energy and practice true self-compassion. It allows us to sit with our discomfort without being consumed by it.
- R – Recognize what is happening: This is the moment you stop “powering through.” You simply acknowledge the sensation. Is there a tightness in my chest? Is there a pulsing in my lower back? What is my breath doing? Recognizing is the first step toward presence.
- A – Allow the experience to be there, just as it is: We often try to fix or fight pain immediately. Allowing means letting the sensation exist without trying to push it away. It’s saying to yourself, “It’s okay that I feel this right now.”
- I – Investigate with gentle curiosity: This is where we look closer at our internal landscape. In somatics, we focus on the sensation rather than the story. Does this pain feel hot or cold? Does it change when I shift my breath? Or move body in a different way? Investigating helps us move from “I am in pain” to “I am noticing a sensation of pressure.”
- N – Nurture with self-compassion: What does this part of you need right now? It might be a gentle rocking movement, a supportive bolster, or simply a kind thought. This is the moment you offer yourself the same grace you would offer a dear friend.
Why This Matters
Loving yourself means honoring your capacity on any given day. Some days, you will have the energy to hike the Land Trust trails in Huntsville; other days, your “yoga” might simply be three conscious breaths while sitting in a chair or at the stop light on the way to work. Both are valid. Both are healing.
At Waterfall Yoga Therapy, I see people arrive every day carrying the weight of years of “powering through.” My goal is to help you stop fighting your body and start listening to it. Using evidence-based somatic practices, we can retrain your nervous system to move away from the “red alert” of chronic pain and back toward a state of flow.
