Meet the Owner: Finding Stillness in the Flow with Sarah Cummins

A woman sits on a soft rug in a black outfit, her hands clasped around her knees, surrounded by greenery. A cozy chair is in the background.

At Waterfall Yoga Therapy, the name isn’t just a peaceful image—it’s a philosophy. It represents the constant movement of life and the steady, restorative power of finding your center within that flow.

Today, we’re sitting down with the heart behind the practice: Sarah Cummins, a Certified Somatic Yoga Therapist and Pain Care Yoga instructor. After 22 years of navigating transitions and helping others find their footing, Sarah has brought her specialized practice to its new home in Huntsville, Alabama.

A Journey Rooted in Resilience

Sarah’s path to yoga therapy wasn’t a straight line; it was shaped by decades of real-world experience. As a former military spouse who relocated her life and practice across continents—from Germany to the Midwest and to the South—she understands the physical and emotional toll that constant change and high-stress environments can take on the nervous system.

With over 25 years of marriage and the experience of raising a family, Sarah brings a grounded, compassionate perspective to her work. She knows that “wellness” isn’t a destination you reach; it’s a toolkit you carry with you.

What is Yoga Therapy, Exactly?

One of the most frequent questions Sarah hears is: “How is this different from a regular yoga class?”

While a standard studio class often focuses on fitness or general relaxation, Yoga Therapy is a clinical, one-on-one application of yogic tools to support specific health goals. Sarah specializes in:

  • Somatic Movement: Reconnecting the brain and the body to release “stuck” patterns of tension.
  • Pain Neuroscience: Using mindful movement to change how the nervous system perceives and processes chronic pain.
  • Nervous System Regulation: Teaching the body how to shift from “fight or flight” into a state of rest and repair.

Beyond the Mat

For Sarah, healing often happens where nature and mindfulness meet. Whether she is incorporating the symbolism of a labyrinth or the calming presence of water into her retreats and private sessions, her goal is to make these tools accessible into any lifestyle and makes it travel-friendly.

When she isn’t at the studio on Cecil Ashburn Drive, you might find her at her home and retreat center. She loves being in nature, painting, writing, and reading. This balance of professional expertise and personal passion is what makes Waterfall Yoga Therapy a unique sanctuary for the Huntsville community.
