Bread Machine Sourdough

A freshly baked loaf of bread sits on a cutting board with a knife placed next to it.

There is nothing better than homemade, fresh bread with simple ingredients. I was blessed to receive a 105 year old sourdough starter. We don’t eat bread often, so I keep the starter in a jar in the refrigerator and pull it out to feed it a day or two before making a loaf of bread. You will love this bread machine sourdough!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 2 tbsp organic sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter, fed and bubbly

Recipe

Timing is everything with bread machine sourdough. I feed my starter first thing in the morning or before I go to bed the night before and leave it on the counter. I allow 2-4 hours between feeding the dough for it to get bubbly. When it’s ready I add the water and melted butter to the bread machine. On top of that add the bread flour, sugar, and salt. Then add the sourdough starter. Use the kneading function or dough function on the bread machine. I knead the dough on two dough cycles in a row. Then I remove the container from the bread machine and place it in the oven with the oven light on. You can also use the bread rise setting on your oven if it has one. If your bread machine has a rise option, you can use that as well. I usually time it so that the bread rises overnight while I sleep. Once bread has risen place it back in the bread maker and set the machine to bake. Pull the bread out and allow it to cool before slicing into heaven!
