Celebrate the Little Things
Let’s learn to celebrate the little things. Think about how often you beat yourself up for the things you say or do. Remember the last time you beat yourself up for a small failure. Next, recall how you reacted with a small win, a little victory, a mini accomplishment.
What’s the difference? I am betting you spent a lot more time and energy recalling the negative, remembering every detail of the failure and how it made you feel. And I’d be willing to bet you spent very little time if you any calling attention to the win. Very little time or energy spent on celebrating the mini accomplishment. Am I right?
I know I am right for myself, and I’m changing that! I realized I stewed over the supposed failures, but I spent very little time giving myself a pat on the back for the good I did, for the goal I met.
One of the things I tell my clients is to celebrate the small wins. Spent two minutes on a breath practice? Win. Wrote in your journal for 3 consecutive days? Win. Practice patience with your kid? Win. Decrease your pain? Win. How do we learn to celebrate the small successes? Celebrate your small success with this class from my on demand courses by taking a Mindful Moment.
How to Celebrate the Little Things
- Take notice! Make it a point to say, “I accomplished_____ and I am going to celebrate by _________!”
- Get pumped up! Bask in the happiness. Be present in the moment with this victory. YOU did this! Stop the negative self-talk. “But I could have…, next time…., when I get better….” You know what I’m talking about. Own this win, no matter how small!
- Gloat: Share your victory with others. Isn’t this why social media was invented?
- Create a habit. Celebrate the small wins daily.
- Reward yourself with something that gives you pleasure. i.e. bowl of ice cream, bath, a good book, a night out, a day off, watch your favorite show, travel, you name it, the world is your oyster.
Celebrating the small wins keeps us moving towards bigger goals and helps us to appreciate the learning process, the journey.
