Distress or Eustress
Distress or Eustress. What is the difference? Did you know stress isn’t always a bad thing?
Eustress
Eustress is the moderate or normal psychological stress interpreted as being beneficial for the experiencer. It is a positive type of stress versus distress, which is a negative form of stress that we often associate as stress. Eustress promotes feelings of well-being and satisfaction.
An example of eustress is excitement about bringing home a new baby, anticipation for a first date, eagerness to compete, the feeling we get with a hard workout, or taking a vacation. Eustress can motivate us, help us focus, improve our performance, and often feels good. Distress on the other hand, causes concern and anxiety, decreases performance, is not enjoyable, and can lead to physical and mental health issues.
Distress
We don’t need any examples of distress. I am sure we all get a healthy dose of that on the daily. Stress is a modern epidemic that contributes to productivity losses in the US alone that amount to $500 billion annually according to the book Chatter by Ethan Cross.
Stress comes in many forms and can affect our bodies and minds in all sorts of ways. Yoga therapy can give you the tools you need to respond to stress in a more healthy way.
