Imposter Syndrome
One thing I have learned after 10 years in the health and wellness industry as a small business owner is that imposter syndrome never goes away. Self-doubt and negative self-talk I believe is human nature. I will say that I have learned to recognize when imposter syndrome creeps in. I hear the voice inside my head saying, “you aren’t good enough.” “Who are you to teach this, what do you know?” “You are such a hypocrite, you don’t even have this nailed down yet.”
The Difference
The difference is 10 years ago I let that little voice hold me back from taking the next step forward. I heard that voice and let her keep on beating me down, let her keep me in fear mode. Now when I hear that voice, I say, “I hear you, but to hell with you! I have value and what I am teaching has value! The people I am helping are worth it.” I recognize the thought. I reframe the thought. And I think about all the people I have helped and all the ways I have changed over the years. I think about how, if I had never stepped out of my fear and self-doubt, how lonely I would be. How I would have given up on small business long ago.
Despite the inner self-talk, successful people do it anyway. Happy people do it anyway. People who want to do amazing shit in life, people who want to help people, people who want to fulfill their life’s purpose- they do it anyway.
What have you given up because of fear, imposter syndrome, or negative self-talk? Are you ready to do the hard thing anyway?
