Pelvic Health
Many of us are aware of our main diaphragm in the thoracic region of our body is a major respiratory muscle that affects our pelvic health. But did you know that your pelvic floor is a diaphragm too? And did you know that the two should work together to create a fluid and functional breath?
The muscles that make up the pelvic floor that sit between the pubic bones, sit bones, and coccyx. They create a hammock of muscles that hold your internal organs in. When we are breathing in a functional and healthy way, the diaphragm (an upside down U) and the pelvic floor ( a right side up U) move together like a jelly fish moves through water. The thoracic diaphragm pushes down on our organs as we breath in and fill the lungs. This creates pressure on the organs which expands the belly pushing pressure downward into the pelvic floor, which in turn stretches the pelvic floor. As you exhale the pressure comes off the abdomen and the pelvic floor and thoracic diaphragm return into position.
Dysfunctional breathing
When our breath is dysfunctional or shallow the chest remains expanded and the abdomen never gets relief. The pelvic muscles remain chronically tight leading to all sorts of issues. Including things like hypertonic pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic pain, low back pain, hip pain, IBS, constipation, pain during sex, and much more. The dysfunction in our breathing could stem from poor posture, injury, trauma, stress, or anxiety, among many other things.
