Pelvic Pain
Do you suffer from Pelvic Pain? Maybe it shows up as low back pain, hip pain, or digestive issues? Perhaps you have tight hamstrings and hip flexors?
Pelvic floor dysfunction impacts 30 million women in North America. And it is estimated that up to 50% of all men will have symptoms of non-bacterial prostatitis in their lifetime. 61% of these people will never get a definitive diagnosis of their pain or issues in this region of the body.
These are some alarming rates of pain and dysfunction of the pelvic floor in our country! Luckily there are a few key components of yoga therapy to understand and implement in your daily life and you’ll be able to find some relief at an affordable cost and in a more holistic way. First, lets give you a little better understanding of this part of the body we often neglect or disassociate from.
Functions of the Pelvic Floor:
- Supportive – holds the organs up and inside the body
- Sphincter – prevents urinary and fecal incontinence
- Sexual – enhances orgasms
- Stability – for pelvic and hip region
- Lymph – play a role in lymphatic health

Muscles of the Pelvic Floor
There are 16 muscles in the pelvic floor that make up 3 separate layers. These muscles are voluntary that means we control them consciously. The muscles are attached to the skeletal frame.
Functions of the Pelvic Floor:
- Inflammation
- Infection
- Trauma
- Muscular conditions
Any chronic inflammatory condition can create a disorder. Any kind of infection such as UTI, yeast infection, bacterial infection, or major disease that affects that area can cause pelvic disorders. Injuries from a fall, surgery; hysterectomy, prostatectomy, C-section, and/or physical and sexual abuse. Weakness in the trunk or pelvic stabilizers as well as spinal misalignment (scoliosis), poor posture, excessive lifting, repetitive motions, childbirth, wearing tight pants, playing sports, incorrect treatment for infections, or even playing a wind instrument. Any of these things can lead to spasm or weakness of the muscles producing a range of dysfunctions from debilitating pain, to IBS, to low back pain, to skin disorders, erectile dysfunction, or low libido.
The pain can radiate from the pelvic floor upward or downward and create a variety of symptoms and are often misdiagnosed in the Doctor’s office by a specialist in the region of pain. Often times that specialist is not even thinking pelvic floor dysfunction as a cause of the symptoms.
