Tools to Eliminate Pain and Stress

Pain and stress affect all of us, but they don’t have to! In this article, you’ll learn my favorite tools to eliminate pain and stress.

As a young military spouse and mom, I felt the pressure of stress and it took a toll on my body and mind. I quickly learned that our stress can create autoimmune disease and I was on the fast track to a life-long illness if I didn’t shape up. With the guidance of many yoga teachers and professionals I learned and adapted 5 key tools for my toolbox and that helped me get back on the fast track to health and wellness.

5 Tools To Eliminate Pain and Stress

  1. Move – Any kind of movement at least once a day. Choose a favorite movement for you and fit it into your schedule. Yoga, walk, garden, or exercise with a class at your favorite gym or online! Some of my go to favorites are my virtual classes here. As well as many safe options on, Hasfit.com and Evlofitness.com.
  2. Breathe – 3 full breaths. When stressed or in pain we often breathe short, shallow breaths keeping our nervous systems hyped up in fight or flight. I remember to take 3 full breaths in 4 situations:
    • Upon awakening
    • When I feel heavy emotion; overwhelm, anger, stress, fear, etc
    • When I’m driving
    • Right after I lay down to go to sleep
  3. Sleep- Get adequate sleep. That is different for many of us especially depending on our age, but sleep is vital to our bodies ability to heal and recover from daily stress, injury and illness. I recommend you start by going to bed within a few hours of sunset and awaken within the first hour or so of daylight. Create a regular bedtime routine that puts you in bed and awakening approximately the same time daily so that you develop a natural circadian rhythm.
  4. Nutrition – I challenge myself daily to eat at least 20 plant based foods daily. This means fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, legumes, beans, etc. If it grows in the ground eat a lot of it! By challenging myself to eat more it makes it fun and more like a game versus a “have to.”
  5. Reflect – this means I spend time doing a variety of things daily to be quiet and still in mind. This may mean prayer, meditation, mindful walk, a warm bath, journaling, or yoga. A place where I can be present in mind, body and spirit without interruption (hopefully)! This is a great day to examine gratitude for the amazing moments in your day and give thanks!
