What is Pain?


Pain is your bodies warning system; it gets you to stop or change your behavior.  While this protection system is vital to your survival, in today’s world of fear, stress, and anxiety; your system may be working overtime.  Neuroscience has confirmed that pain always involves your brain, and is never purely physical; it is complex, subjective, and involves your mind.  Pain is a biopsychosocial problem affected by thoughts, past experiences, and social environment.  All things matter when it comes to reducing and changing pain; therefore, we must treat the whole person, not just a body part. Chronic pain is one of the leading health problems facing Americans and costing $630 billion annually.  If you have persistent pain, you know the quest to uncover the cause of pain can feel hopeless, but there is hope to live well again.

The Cultural Pain Problem


Your brain’s neuroplasticity means that your brain can change over time, like the muscles in your body.  If you work out a muscle at the gym it gets bigger.  Similarly, the more you practice pain, the more sensitive your pain pathways become. Your brain learns to amplify sensory messages in the body and interprets them as dangerous more often than necessary. 


In addition, Western medical professionals are poorly trained in pain science and in assessing and managing pain holistically.  Traditional medicine focuses on isolating a body part, but it doesn’t take into account the root cause.  Many medical offices are overbooked, understaffed, and fail to have the time or education in pain biology. Let alone the time to evaluate how diet, exercise, stress, and mental health are affecting your nervous system function and contributing to your pain.

Lastly, our culture has become too busy and distracted to take the time to discover what the body requires of us. Things such as rest, water, nutrition, or movement. Our lack-of-time mentality and instant gratification mode determines it’s much easier to take a pill, or have a procedure, than do the work to get to the root of the problem. To our detriment, our culture is stuck in danger mode through political divide, social media, addiction, overstimulation, and trauma that combine over time, changing our physiology.  Science has proven stress, anxiety, anger, sadness, and grief turn up the pain dial. This brain/pain connection will continue to change our biology, nervous system, immune and endocrine functions, and muscular tension over time unless we change the way we approach pain.
